Powerpoint of 'Introduction of Chinese Acupuncture |

What is TCM? Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system. It is used to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease and improve well-being. This ancient Chinese healing art was developed over 4000 years ago. TCM includes: Acupuncture, Chinese Massage (Tui Na), Herb, Qi Gong exercise, Gua-sha, food therapy, meditation etc. TCM works naturally to stimulate the body's inherent healing process. TCM affects the underlying cause of illness or pain. TCM always focuses on the whole person, enhances physical well-being, the balance of Yin-Yang, moving the good Qi and helping blood circulation. Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical therapies
in the world. It is an ancient Chinese healing method of treating a disease
or relieving pain by inserting several tiny, hair-thin and painless metal
needles at certain points of the human body. However, acupuncture treatment
procedures do not always involve needles. Sometimes, an acupuncturist
can use Moxa, Acupressure, Herbs, Cupping, Gae-sha, Heating, and Magnets
to treat patients. |

Acupuncture is highly effective not only as a preventative
medicine, but is also a drug free treatment. It influences the central
and peripheral nervous system. Many scientific research have proven
that acupuncture can boost the immunity of the body, increase pain threshold,
and help the body release more neurotransmitters and endorphins, which
are the body's natural pain-killing hormones. One study showed that
endorphins are 200 times more potent than morphine. That's why acupuncture
works well for different pain syndromes. Acupuncture also can increase
anti-inflammatory effects. This is very efficacious when treating arthritis
and muscle, tendon and ligament pain, that have spasms and have become
swollen.

How widely is acupuncture used in the world?
Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs are one of the most common natural medical therapies in the world. It is very popular in Asian countries and European countries, such as China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, France and Germany. In the past two decades, acupuncture has grown in popularity in the United States. The National Institute of Health in 1997 stated that acupuncture is being "widely" practiced, and statistics shows in a recent survey that nearly 1 out 10 American adults has tried or is being treated by acupuncture and 48% of them have reported that they are "Extremely or very satisfied". |

How many treatments does a patient need?
An experienced acupuncturist can tell you the appropriate treatment plan after the first consultation. In general, according to the patient's condition and case history, acute problems will need treatment for twice or 3 times a week for 2 or 3 weeks. Chronic problems will need acupuncture 1 or 2 times a week for several weeks. Each treatment usually lasts from 30-60 minutes.
